What’s the Buzz About Bees?

Bees are so important to our ecosystem. Did you know that 1/3 of our food comes from pollinators like bees?

The honey bee is the only insect that produces food that can be eaten by man.

Honey bees can fly up to 15 miles per hour.

Bees can flap their wings 11,000 times per second which makes their buzzing sound.

Mr. Lowell Duhon- Beekeeper

The photos below show Mr. Duhon harvesting frames of honey from his beehives.

The female worker bees collect nectar and pollen from flowering plants and store it in hexagonal wax cells called honeycombs. The cells are also used by the queen to lay her eggs called brood. When the temperature is right, the bees cap the cells holding the honey. When it’s time to harvest honey, the caps are then gently scraped off. Wax is then strained and pure honey is ready to jar and enjoy!
